I was watching the news today and two industry experts were arguing over the reasons that our gas prices are through the roof. Both had valid points and were right to an extent. It reminded me of all the SEO experts that we have with a growing number of them hanging their signs out each day.
If you put three SEO experts in a room and ask them the best approach to dominating the search engines you will surely get three different answers. Chances are all three will have valid points. There is no one best way to dominate the search engines (sort of
) in fact it depends on which market you are in.
My clients range from those who are making a killing in Adsense to independent authors who are making thousands of dollars selling their book. Although the basic ingredients are the same there are some small subtleties that make a huge difference. For example keyword density plays a factor among many other factors when it comes to gaining a front page position in the search engines. There is an endless supply of industry experts that will tell you that your keyword density should be 1 to 3 percent. I have seen other so-called experts that claim it should be higher. The question is, who is right? Well that answer depends on several other factors such as, the niche market, and the number of words on the page for the top 10 sites in that market.
Some experts claim that your keyword phrase should always be used at the beginning of your page. In theory that sounds good, however it is not always the case and can hurt you in many situations. When it comes to SEO there is no hard and fast rules. Look at it this way… A doctor will tell you if you have a broken arm you need a cast. This would be true in most cases, however in reality it depends on the brake. Some may need pins to aid in the healing process, some may be a hairline fracture that only needs a brace, some may require surgery. The point I am trying to make is SEO should be handled on a case by case bases.
I am not just going to leave you hanging I will give you a quick cheat sheet on some of the factors that MUST be taken into consideration when it comes to on page SEO.
- Page Title
- Meta Description
- Meta Keywords
- Body Text
- H1 Headings
- Bold Text
- Anchor Text
- Image Alt Text
- Image Alt Text
- Site Load Time
If you are one of those individuals who believe that any of the 10 things listed above does not factor into dominating the search engines please email me and I will be more than happy to take over your niche market
Before you get started I know what you are probably thinking… Most people say that search engines like Google do not pay attention to meta tags anymore. The TRUTH is they do!!! They just calculate meta data in a different way. Meta data does not make a huge difference when it comes to SEO however every little bit counts.
Load time is another factor that is often over looked. Google just recently put more weight on the way they calculate it into their algorithm. I love when I see my competitors with flash, a bunch of java script, and huge images on their website. It is just one more thing that I know I can use against them and take their lunch money.
