Ok… Class is in session, so pay close attention and prepare to bookmark this page, because you are going to want to come back to it.

Understanding DoFollow and NoFollow Links

Your going to love this – in reality there is no such term as DoFollow. Right now your probably saying… HUH? DoFollow is a slang internet term that is given to web pages that DO NOT utilize the NoFollow tag. The NoFollow tag is nothing more than a tag that is placed inside of your link code to tell search engines not to give any “Link Juice” or credibility to that particular outbound link. The NoFollow tag was originally designed to help the blogging community in their efforts to reduce the number of inserted links that spammers were injecting in the comment area of their blogs. In a nut shell all of the spammers you have spamming your blog on a daily basis trying to post their Viagra links in the comment section of your blog do not receive any benefits for their efforts.

The Search For The Holy Grail

Every since the NoFollow tag showed up on the scene, the link building process has taken a swift kick in right in the butt. Once the word was out that the NoFollow tag helped in cutting down on spam, it began to spread like the Ebola virus and sites began utilizing this strategy.  Although it tremendously cut down on the amount of spam that sites were receiving, it also put a choke hold on the efforts of the honest and hard working Internet Marketers. Once the dust started to settle over the DoFollow and NoFollow links controversy, the much sought after DoFollow links became the Holy Grail that every Internet Marketer desired.

Before You Pass Judgement Hear Me Out

When it comes to choosing sides in the DoFollow and NoFollow links war, going after NoFollow links is not necessarily a bad thing. Although NoFollow links pass on no Link Juice whatsoever, they do help do two things; 1) You can still generate traffic from the NoFollow sites where your link is located. 2) You will gain more exposure which will eventually lead to your link possibly being placed on more DoFollow sites.

The Judge And Jury Have Spoken Regarding The DoFollow And NoFollow Links Battle

The big question that I get all of the time is, “How does Google weigh in on the DoFollow and NoFollow links debate?”  Fist let me start off by saying, that each of the search engines deal with the NoFollow tag in their own way. I know, I know you could care less about the rest of the search engines, and you only want to know about Google. Well Google does follow the NoFollow links, however it does not pass any PageRank™ to an outbound link that has this tag in the link.

Yahoo also follows all NoFollow links, but they exclude the link from all of their ranking calculations. As far as Bing is concerned the jury is still out. Not of my tests have shown conclusively if their bots do or do not follow NoFollow links. What is known is they exclude the link from their calculations.

How Do I Find DoFollow Sites For My Link Building Strategy?

Before I fork over my Holy Grail list of DoFollow websites I want to first tell you how they came about, and recommend that you follow in my footsteps. I have a list that I keep on my desktop and anytime I come by a useful DoFollow site I save it to my file for later use. You will be amazed at how quickly you will accumulate your very own Holy Grail list.

I must also ask that you do not spam the resources that I am about to share with you in a moment. Although spamming may initially pay off, the ends never justifies the means. Not to mention you will ruin a good thing for everyone, and your actions will lead to those who do allow DoFollow links to convert to NoFollow. Your mission is a simple one if you choose to take it. All you have to do is make sure all of your link submissions are done honestly. By that I mean do not use keyword stuffing practices. If you do things the right way the search engine gods shall smile upon you and reward you with good search rankings.

Major Search Engines Are For The Use Of DoFollow And NoFollow Links

Hold on to your socks we are going to get to my Holy Grail list. I just thought of one more thing that I want to cover before we get to my list. It is important that you understand that the major search engines spend millions of dollars on a regular basis to improve their technology. There methods for returning relevant search results are improving on a daily basis. With that said, and out the way you should also note that creating multiple links on one DoFollow site or if that particular site is also linking to other resources that are giving your backlinks the search engines will eventually catch this and either drop the value of your link or remove it from the search engines all together.

The Key To DoFollow And NoFollow Links

The key to your success is to organically build your backlinks. Provide the end user with value and a solution to the problem they are having and you will do very well.

You may want to write this next statement down… Are you ready? ONLY THE FIRST LINK POINTING TO A PARTICULAR SITE COUNTS. Attempting to place several links on the same page to the same source will not help you at all.

Ok… Ok… As promised here is my Holy Grail list:

I use UAW to submit my articles to other directories as well as generate my unique content. If you are already using it (and you should be) I need not say more. If you do not have a clue what I am talking about then go check it out.

Article Writing Tips

When writing articles for both DoFollow and NoFollow Links, the rules of OPO (On Page Optimization) are the same. You will want your articles to be well optimized, to help get them ranked in the search engines. You want to make sure that your keyword phrase is in your title, the first paragraph, the middle of the article and towards the end. You should also use different variations of your keyword phrase, and most importantly remember to use your keyword phrase in your the anchor text.

Now that you have a better understanding about DoFollow and NoFollow links, it is time to put what you learned to practical use.

Link Wheel 4.0

Let me first clear the air about the “LINK WHEEL THEORY” -  years ago I call it “Link Web” and I use to teach it to my students. Someone took it relabeled it calling it Link Wheel (giving me ZERO credit of course LOL) and started teaching it. The funny part is everyone understands the basic process that it is a network of sits that are linked together for the purpose of driving traffic to a specific destination i.e. your webpage. Where the crap starts to hit the fan and the part that 90% of the people I see are getting it wrong is they are plugging in some of the wrong sites in the wheel and very few are building upon the first level of the wheel. The second major ERROR that I have noticed is most people do not understand the role that the DoFollow and NoFollow Links play in the success of your Link Wheel.

Since I truly do like the term Link Wheel instead of what I originally was calling it, “Link Web” I will give you a brief breakdown of how it is REALLY suppose to be done, and why it is done this way.

Your targeted page can be your blog post, or your squeeze page. You DO NOT WANT TO USE THE SAME CONTENT FROM YOUR TARGETED PAGE TO CREATE YOUR LINK WHEEL. Pay special attention to the sites being used to create the link wheel. They are all DoFollow links! This is why it is important to have a crystal clear understanding of the DoFollow and NoFollow Links principal.

The Google bots are constantly on the sites that I have selected, which means that it is SUPER EASY for you to get your targeted page indexed.

NOTE: ALWAYS DO YOUR ON-PAGE OPTIMIZATION BEFORE BUILDING YOUR LINK WHEEL

Social Bookmark each page of your Link Wheel (the DoFollow and NoFollow Links principals apply with social bookmarking as well.)

Create an Ezine article based on another comparable Keyword Phrase and link to your original targeted page, and your Squidoo page. This is killing two birds with one stone. You have a new link going to the targeted page thus increasing traffic and backlinks giving your targeted page more link juice.

Start building your link wheel but this time you are building it around your Ezine Article. This will help push the Ezine Article up in the search engines, as well as adding more creditability to the Squidoo page from layer one of your Link Wheel.  Once you have completed the second layer of your Link Wheel do the same thing with another article directory i.e. GoArticles and link to the Targeted Page as well as the HubPage from layer one of the Link Wheel. Continue the process over and over and over.

When Do You Stop Creating Link Wheel Layers?

Continue creating layer after layer of the Link Wheel until you have dominated the market. If I am competing in an extremely competitive market I will continue piling the layers on until I have pushed my page up to the top of Google or I am satisfied with the amount of traffic that I am coming in.

The SEO Bully’s Final Thoughts Regarding DoFollow and NoFollow Links

I hope that I have solved the mystery of the DoFollow and NoFollow links for you. They both serve their purposes and can be used to leverage a ton of traffic to any website.

The key to the Link Wheel is building it based on solid keyword research. I actually have niche markets where I own the entire front page of Google. I know those people paying those high PPC prices must be sick when they see the way I totally crush the search engines.
