I cannot emphasize enough the importance of knowing how to do keyword research. If you get it right your going to make money. If you get it wrong your going to loose money, your going to get frustrated, and probably add a few grey hairs. In this blog post my goal is to explain to you the various types of keyword research that you should be focusing on. There is a lot more to this game than just getting traffic to your site.
Keep in mind the goal is to serve your site visitors. If you make the visitors happy you will be well rewarded. By doing precise keyword research you will attract the visitors that are looking for what you have to offer.
Merchant Site
Lets say that you are selling a product or service. This is an entirely different animal than doing research for an adsense site for example. When you have a site that is selling a product and or service you want to find what is known as buying keyword phrases. This is different than those individuals who are just searching for information.
The question in your mind now should be what exactly is a buying keyword? Lets say your site is selling golf clubs. Which keyword phrase do you think a buyer is more likely to use - XYZ Golf clubs or left handed golf clubs for women? If you said, “left handed golf clubs” you are correct.
Understanding The Buyers Mindset
It has been proven that a prospect will visit a site a minimum of 7 times before making the decision to buy. When they are in the buying mindset they search for long tail keyword phrases. NO ONE buys when search terms such as, 3D TV, Rolex watch etc. Those that are ready to buy, will search for search terms such as, Presidential Rolex Watch, Left Handed Women’s Golf Clubs, or MacBook Pro laptop.
If your website is selling some sort of product or service, you will see much better results by optimizing your pages for specific long tail keyword phrases.
What About VRE Sites
VRE or Virtual Real Estate type sites (adsense) require a different type of mindset when it comes to doing keyword research. This type of site requires a lot more content to be effective. With adsense or adsense type sites you will want the following items for your keyword phrases.
- High AWCPC
- 50+ traffic
- Competition 300,000 and below

Its cool to use free keyword tools initially. However it will not work for doing in depth research. Free tools can give you a good basis of what is going on in your niche, but will not help you make money. The free tools DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH INFORMATION for you to intelligently make a decision.
