For those of you that may be a little behind on whats been going on with Google, they have released the +1 button as a means to compete with Facebook’s like button. Webmasters can add the +1 button to their website easily (add button).

Visitors that visit your site can vote for your site by clicking the +1 button. In the eyes of Google a site that receives a lot of +1 clicks must offer something of value. In Googles opinion it makes since to give those pages a little boost in the search rankings.

Here Comes The Scammers

Opportunist will always be there to try to shortcut their way to the top, and rob you of your hard earned cash. There are services springing up all over the net that claim to increase the number of clicks to your +1 button.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT – Why is it that these companies never use their own services? I’m just saying… Sounds a little suspect to me!

Why These Services Will Not Help:

•  You must have a Google account in order to click the +1 button. Google knows who is clicking and they know when some one just visits a page to click the +1 button and leaves. Not to mention that this also increases your bounce rate – duh!
• The majority of these services will use the same accounts or attempt to create new accounts. Again Google did not dominate the market by being a bunch of dumb asses.

Here is a little secret… Its not the quantity of the clicks it is the quality.

What does all of this mean for you?

The +1 clicks are indeed a ranking factor in Google’s algorithm and you should add it to your site. Since this is relatively new, it is to your advantage to get in on the ground floor.

There are many things that you will need to consider when competing for organic search engine traffic. The SEO game is simple – follow the rules and you will do just fine.

Here is how the fake Flash Domination works…

There are several “tricks” that will work, but in my opinion they are either black hat techniques or so close to being black hat techniques that I would never attempt to use them. In fact I will not even mention them here out of fear that some idiot reading this will attempt them out of desperation.

The Facts

Adobe the creators of Flash have indeed improved their product which will allow search engines to index Flash to an extent. During extensive testing we were able to get some Flash pages to rank well in low competitive markets. Those pages were easily knocked off their high horses by other optimized keyword pages with very little effort.

If your site is a pure Flash content based site it will not be indeed by search engines. Our testing has shown that even with all of Flashes improvements that at best the search engines will only be able to read 5 to 10% of your websites content.

A Little Reading Can Go A Long Way

Google has numerous releases that deal specifically with Flash content:

“Search engines are text based. This means that in order to be crawled and indexed, your content needs to be in text format. Any content you embed in these files should also be available in text format or it won’t be accessible to search engines.

We recommend that you use rich-media technologies like Flash primarily for decorative purposes, and instead use HTML for content and navigation.

MR. Client Your Fired!

I just fired a client because he insisted that Flash could be indexed the same as any other pages according to some magazine article that he just read. At the risk of giving up $3,500 USD a month I will not do a half ass job, and I will not jump on every new theory bandwagon that comes my way.

The client forwarded an email sent to him by the company he contacted from a magazine. Check out this dudes advice:
Flash sites are extremely simple to get indexed if you know what you are doing. After reviewing your site I would take the approach of adding your pages content in a noscript tag. This will ensure that the search engines get the right content.

Here is another direct quote from John Mueller (another dude from Google).

“One of the problems with noscript is – as others have mentioned – that it’s been abused quite a bit by spammers, so search engines might treat it with some suspicion.

So if this is really important content, then I wouldn’t rely on all search engines treating your noscript elements in the same way as normal, visible, static content on your pages. If this is ‘just’ for comments, then that might be worth considering.”

I MUST USE FLASH BECAUSE IT LOOKS SO COOL

For those of you who are addicted to Flash and desperately need an intervention, here is my advice to you.

Only use Flash for decorative purposes
You navigation should use regular HTML ‘a href’ links, and WHATEVER YOU DO – do not use fancy shmancy (yes thats a word) JavaScript or Flash navigation menus. Most search engines cannot parse them and those that do really do not do it that well.
The main content of your website should be available as simple text.

A Word Of Advice

As an entrepreneur you have to make some vital decisions when it comes growing your business. If you are trying to wear all of the hats i.e. Webmaster, content creator, SEO expert etc.. you are killing your scalability. That is equivalent to trying to run a doctors office and trying to fill all the positions yourself.

• This is the biggest one that I most commonly see. People have a belief that they are going to get rich quick online. Many Internet Marketers make a full time living preying on these people. I am talking about the people that have been spending years trying to make money online and they have not reached their goal yet.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of knowing how to do keyword research. If you get it right your going to make money. If you get it wrong your going to loose money, your going to get frustrated, and probably add a few grey hairs. The question in your mind now should be what exactly is a buying keyword? Lets say your site is selling golf clubs. Which keyword phrase do you think a buyer is more likely to use -  XYZ Golf clubs or left handed golf clubs for women? If you said, “left handed golf clubs” you are correct.

Understanding The Buyers Mindset

It has been proven that a prospect will visit a site a minimum of 7 times before making the decision to buy. When they are in the buying mindset they search for long tail keyword phrases. NO ONE buys when search terms such as, 3D TV, Rolex watch etc. Those that are ready to buy, will search for search terms such as, Presidential Rolex Watch, Left Handed Women’s Golf Clubs, or MacBook Pro laptop.

If your website is selling some sort of product or service, you will see much better results by optimizing your pages for specific long tail keyword phrases.

What About VRE Sites

VRE or Virtual Real Estate type sites (adsense) require a different type of mindset when it comes to doing keyword research. This type of site requires a lot more content to be effective. With adsense or adsense type sites you will want the following items for your keyword phrases.

Content Segmenting

For the most part the majority of web pages consist of a header, footer, navigation, content, etc. Not all parts of a page are considered equal in Google’s eyes, but I am sure you already knew that much. The text that appears in the main content of your page will be deemed more valuable than the text in any other areas of the page i.e. the footer.

How The Content Is Analyzed

The Google spider and its desire to imitate a human is becoming more of a reality with every algorithm update. Google’s spider will look at your HTML of your page, and try to simulate the display of a web page as it would appear in a browser. It does this in an effort to understand the exact location as well as the purpose of the various parts of the page.

What Is Analyzed In The Different Parts

According to the patent there are several modules that are used to analyze your web page. Those modules are as follows:

Link Analysis – Links that are discovered in different semantically distinct regions may be assigned different values or weights. What that basically means is that the influence of a link in the main part of a web page is probably higher than the influence of a link at the bottom of the page or the footer.
Text Analysis – The value of text on your web page is rated by location i.e. if your keyword phrase appears in the main content or int the title, this page will rank much higher than a page that has your keyword phrase at the bottom or towards the footer.
Image Caption – Any text found near your image is considered to be more relevant to the image than text that is further away. The main function of this module is to rank pictures in the image search results.
Search Result Snippet – The net is cluttered with “gurus” that state that Google does not use the meta description tag. Well that is not entirely true. Google will create the search result snippet based on the text in your web page section that is the most relevant to your keyword phrase.

eCommerce Sites Attacked By Panda

If you are the owner of an ecommerce site you may want to duck for cover. Google’s new update that was made on February 24, 2011 wreak havoc on those who have a large site with product descriptions that are duplicate. If you have a small ecommerce site, no big deal simply rewrite the description content and move on with life. However if you have an ecommerce site with 10,000+ pages you are in for a headache.

Its sad to say this but it appears that a lot of legitimate ecommerce sites are being labeled as content farms. If you have an ecommerce site and you have not been affected yet, start updating your site ASAP because your day is coming. If it does you will notice at least a 50% decrease in traffic overnight.

Food For Thought
When you take your car in to be repaired the mechanic will hook his computer up to your car’s computer. He will then run an overall analysis which will give him a general idea of what is wrong with your car. This report will tell the mechanic what is working correctly and what needs to be repaired. Although it only takes the mechanic a few minutes to generate this analysis, they charge anywhere from $75 to $150.

I also use a similar analysis for my clients website. When a client comes to me before I do anything I need to have an over all view of what is going on. Unfortunately my analysis report can take up to a week to complete depending on the size of the website.  I also have to take into consideration such factors as what type of platform my clients website is running on. Is it WordPress? Static pages? or something such as an eCommerce site which consist of dynamically generated pages.

Generating a general analysis for a client can take up to a week depending on the number of pages the site has. It is literally impossible for you to diagnose why your site is not ranking well without having an analysis done. By not having an analysis it is like throwing darts in the dark trying to hit a bullseye.

According to the Online Publishers Association, the algorithm changed shifted approximately $1 billion in annual revenue. What does that mean Tim? Let me put it this way… A lot of people are looking in the help wanted ads for a job as you sit there reading this awesome blog post.

Blog post all over the Internet have been saying that the new change was only focused on content farms. THIS IS NOT TRUE!!! The new algorithm also targets low quality websites. That raises the question, “What does Google consider low quality websites?” I have put together a list to clear up any confusion that you may have:

• Websites that do not have enough content to be considered useful
• Websites with poorly written content
• Websites that consist of content that have been copied from other websites (this is a HUGE NO NO.)

It use to be that unique content was good enough, well those days are long gone you have to go beyond unique content. You content has to actually be useful to the end user. If you have low quality content on a portion of a website it can bring down the overall score of the entire site.

The best advice that I can give you is to REMOVE any low quality, or scraped pages that you currently have on your site. Re-optimize the pages, and continue to build high quality backlinks.

Speaking Of Backlinks

According to Google’s Matt Cutts you should not be using article marketing because the websites that publish your articles and the backlinks to your site are of low quality. He has stated that “in his opinion” that Google will soon devalue those type of links and this two could affect your search engine rankings.

For years I have taught various article marketing strategies, and I too am sad to hear those good times coming to an end. I would imagine you share my feelings on this issue and are asking, “what should I do now?”

Continue building high quality pages and start focusing 75% of your efforts on building quality backlinks from sources such as high quality link directories. If you haven’t done so in the past start utilizing Squidoo pages, HubPages, and Facebook pages.

Link Exchanges

The Internet Marketing cycle has come full cycle. In the beginning before the Search Engine Wars, link exchanges were the way to generate traffic. Once search engines came into play, the art of exchanging links faded away. It would appear that they are making a come back, and a strong one at that.

If you put three SEO experts in a room and ask them the best approach to dominating the search engines you will surely get three different answers. Chances are all three will have valid points. There is no one best way to dominate the search engines (sort of ) in fact it depends on which market you are in.

My clients range from those who are making a killing in Adsense to independent authors who are making thousands of dollars selling their book. Although the basic ingredients are the same there are some small subtleties that make a huge difference. Before you get started I know what you are probably thinking… Most people say that search engines like Google do not pay attention to meta tags anymore. The TRUTH is they do!!! Search Engine Position Ranking – Title Tag Tips

If you had three Internet Marketers in a room and asked them if they felt the title tag is important, you would inevitably get three different answers. The information that I am sharing with you is a result of my own personal experiences and not the ramblings that I read in some ebook.

What is a Title Tag?

The title tag is a small piece of HTML code that looks like this:

In this example the keyword phrase is “On Page Optimization.” Notice how I used it at the beginning of the Title Tag. This is done to display the importance to the search engine bots.

Your not always going to be able to use your keyword phrase at the beginning of your Title Tag and still have your title legible. Your goal is to at least have it as close to the beginning of the title as possible.

Your Title Tag is the first element of your web page that the visitors see, as well as the first element on your web site to be indexed by the search engines. As far as the visitor is concerned you will need to make your Title Tag appealing, and eye catching. When it appears in the SERs (Search Engine Results), it has to make the reader want to click it and visit your page.

Just remember when it comes to your Title Tag you have to find a balance. You goal is to please the almighty search engines that will bring you tons of traffic as well as your visitors who will bring you riches if you deliver as promised.

What Is A Meta Description Tag?

It is true that the Meta Description Tag no longer carries the amount of weight that it once did. It is also true that it is better to have one than not have it at all. Your Meta Description Tag looks like this:

The Header Tag is used for the sites Header, subtitles, and as post titles. Often times you can break up your content by using headers to introduce each new section or thought.

There are some text style HTML tags that will help you to earn some extra points with the search engines. For example the <b> or <strong> tags can be used to emphasize your targeted keyword phrase. Keep in mind OVER USING THIS TAG WILL GET YOU PENALIZED SO USE WITH CAUTION.

Just like the bold tag, there is an Italic tag which should also be used to highlight your keyword phrase in your copy. This tag looks like this:

This too must be used with caution.

The last of the HTML tags that will serve you is the underline tag. This is used like the bold tag and the italic tag. Just like the others it should be used with caution and over using it could easily get you penalized.

Some so-called industry experts say that keyword density is not important. The truth is they are flat out retarded! It uses things such as your Title Tags, your Meta Descriptions, and the content on your page to determine what your page is about.

It does not take a rocket scientist to determine the fact that your keyword density plays an important factor when it comes to search engine position ranking and on-page optimization. Since I see so many free sites out there that offer keyword density formula calculators that are inaccurate, I thought I should just show you how to do the formula yourself.

1. Count the number of total words on your page (you can copy and paste your copy in any word processing program such as Word or Pages to find out the total number of words.)
2. Count the number of times you have used your targeted keyword phrase in your copy.

Apply the formula below:

Keyword Density = ([Keyword Count]*100)/(Total Word Count)

I realize not everyone loves mathematics as much as I do so allow me to give you a real life example of how the formula works when it comes to search engine position ranking:

Lets say that your copy is 500 words about Search Engine Position Ranking, which is the term that you are optimizing your page for.

• The total word count: 500
• The number of times your keyword phrase was used: 12
• “Search Engine Position Ranking” (density) = (12*100)/500

Your keyword density = 2.4%

Once again I cannot emphasize enough the importance of finding that perfect balance, when trying to please the search engines and your visitors. Many newbies make the mistake of focusing to much on trying to utilize their keyword phrase that they tend to over use it, which hurts them ultimately.

When I first started in Internet Marketing there were not as many tools to help automate the process and achieve a top search engine position ranking like there is today. It use to take me hours just to correctly optimize one page – it was horrible.
